Equations
Equations are math sentences that have a missing piece. You have to figure out the missing piece. The variable (letter) represents the missing piece. Equations look like expressions, except they have an equals included in them. 3x is and expression, 3x = 6 is an equation. Nobody has to tell us what to substitute for the variable, we will solve the equation to figure out the variable. Another difference is that Equations have 1 answer. Some terms that mean = are: equals, amounts to, is.
In order to solve an equation we have to use inverse operations, which means to do the opposite. We can do anything to the equation, as long as we do the same thing to both sides of the equal sign. Start with the addition & subtraction. Then work with the multiplication & division of the numbers that are NOT attached to the variable. Save the number attached (multiplied) to the variable for the very last. In the end, we want only the variable and the number it is equal to.

Inequalities
Inequalities are math sentences that may or may not be equal to a number and are greater than or less than a number. We will use several symbols:
The easiest symbol to remember is the less than symbol because it creates the heart when typing. i <3 u is actually "i is less than 3 u". Bet you didn't realize that the < symbol was on your keyboard because it is a needed math symbol!
